Sometimes it's difficult to locate multiple sources for inspiration, explanation, and just general reference, especially in a budget. I have compiled a list of books that I have found useful or have had recommended to me. Medieval Fashions Coloring Book
by Tom Tierney (Paperback - May 1998)
This is a good reference for possible fashions in some period concept artwork and designs. These line drawings, however, are rendered in a very modern style.

Celtic Fashions Coloring Book
by Tom Tierney (Paperback - March 2002)
More line drawings of period costumes. Again, the drawings themselves are modern in style.

Knights & Ladies (Costumes for Coloring Series)
by Jenny Williams (Illustrator), Martha Bushko (Paperback - October 1996)
Modern drawings of romantic based garb with descriptions and explanations. Some linear perspective based backgrounds not period looking either. Some border ornamentation as well.

The Chronicle of Western Fashion: From Ancient Times to the Present Day
by John Peacock (Hardcover - April 1991)
Color drawings of period costumes. Pages are specific to time periods, but this reference covers a wide span of history so it is very general.

A Medieval Alphabet to Illuminate
(Paperback - September 1985)
Nicely presented black and white outlines of medieval illumination with accompanying references to manuscript sources

Medieval Alphabets and Decorative Devices (Dover Design Library)
by Henry Shaw (Editor) (Paperback - April 1999)
Ornate individual letters from decorative alphabets, looks a bit Victorian in many areas.

A Coloring Book of the Middle Ages
(Paperback - September 1985)
From various sources, this book contains many good examples of medieval flattened perspective, and disproportion. With source references as well.

Middle Ages Dover Coloring Book
by Gillon Ev, Edmund V., Jr. Gillon (Paperback - June 1976)
These images are great prints of woodcuts from the late 15th century. Not modern line drawings, but actual copies of the prints.

Good quick reference of decorative alphabet clip art.

A Coloring Book of Ancient Ireland

Nice knotwork and flat designs from Celtic sources. Also contains a running commentary along with source references.

Unicorns
by J. K. Anderson (Paperback - September 1985)
If you like unicorns, this book contains a lot of line drawings based on 16th and 17th century sources.

Mostly flat designs with varying amounts of detail of floral, human, creatures, and lettering.

Well reproduced 16th century woodcuts with great detail of various animals and mythological beasts.
